Draft Day

A phone that wouldn’t ring, and the longest afternoon of my life. A living room in Niles, a mother keeping score of nothing, and a father who would not let anybody see him watch the clock. The name comes off a board somewhere and a life divides in half.

Minor League Midnight

Long buses, bad coffee, and the part of the dream nobody photographs. Twelve hundred a month, five months a year, and a per diem logged off the register receipt. The Code had a page for this — which was the only reason it didn’t kill him.

The Call-Up

The phone finally rang. After that, nothing was ever small again. A green-and-gold jersey with his name on the back, in the park his uncle had been paying his own way into since 1968.
